The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, 2011
Video, 4’, loop
The work deals with mass choreography, which was a specific segment of the Youth Day celebration. In psychology, the gestalt effect is a phenomenon that makes us visually recognize figures and whole forms, instead of a bunch of individual elements. In mass choreography, that element is an individual. In mass choreography an individual is stripped of uniqueness being a part of something bigger. At the same time, this may be perceived as one of important features of communism.
With a modern aesthetic approach, through computer animation, the work abstracts characteristics (rhythm, dynamics, mass, volatile geometry, boundaries of an individual element) and builds new compositions inspired by mass choreography.
